So Colborne confirmed that Wellington was still with the 52nd, and that elements of the French cavalry were prevented from making an attack by being kept on the move. The duke clearly appreciated that the momentum of the advance had to be maintained. But the regimental field officers were equally correct in exercising caution in the face of potential cavalry attack and in maintaining tightly controlled cohesion, for it was the impression of invincibility that this projected, which frightened off the cavalry. Let us not forget that the men of the brigade had been moving at speed across hazardous terrain for a distance of some 1,500 yards and must have been tiring.
